Cassandra Knows
One early Sunday morning after a night of not much sleep,
Cassandra sat beside her window pane.
She was lookin’ out for answers just to calm her beating heart,
But nothing seemed to penetrate the rain.
She looked over at her husband, lying quietly at peace,
So in love with him and how he’s changed her life.
And she wondered if he’s ready for the choice she had to make,
How does a husband live without his wife?
Cassandra knows when her plane departs,
She’ll look back upon a trail of broken hearts,
But no matter how the sadness grows,
Cassandra knows.
She doesn’t want to leave her family, she doesn’t want to say goodbye,
But she made her mind up many months ago.
Cause when they came on 9/11 and they destroyed so many lives,
She was helpless then, but why, she didn’t know.
And when her sister lost her children and her brother lost his wife,
Cassandra’s heart made sounds she’d never heard before.
And although she felt defeated and though she struggled from day to night,
Cassandra found the strength to go and join the corps.
Cassandra knows deep inside her soul,
that she might be the one for whom the bell will toll,
but however the wind must blow,
Cassandra knows.
Oh Cassandra...
She lays a kiss upon her children and she swears she’ll be home soon,
But the kids don’t know why she’s gotta go and what for.
They’re gonna have to stick together, they’re gonna have to fight each day,
This is the greatest battle fought within the war.
Now she’s off to serve her country, to protect the red and the white and the blue,
There is nothing more for Cassandra to explain.
This country loves Cassandra, we are so grateful for her strength.
But how much can we ask her to sustain?
