Where are my numerologists?? This show is on 9/18! I was curious, so I looked this up and.... . APPARENTLY - The date September 18 (9/18) reduces to the core Number 9 (9 + 1 + 8 = 18, and 1 + 8 = 9). It blends the humanitarian, completion-focused energy of 9 with the independent, driven, and ambitious combination of 1 and 8, creating a powerful vibration of a spiritual warrior, leadership, and the end of old cycles. . I mean, who doesn't want that? . This song has one of the most intimate lyrics I’ve ever read, yet it’s almost always performed as an uptempo, high-energy swing tune. I wanted to start inside the quietest moments of the lyric and explore that unique instant when you’re the only person in the world who knows what’s about to happen and just how amazing it’s going to be... . Took a trip back to 2015 for a moment and found this blues... the first lyric was inspired by this person who was zig-zaggin' in front of me on the sidewalk because they were starring at their phone as they walked. I thought quite loudly, "if you're gonna walk, just walk!" As soon as I got home, I thought I would write a Tom Lehrer-esque commentary song on how phones have co opted our lives. . Guess I was a little too frustrated with that phone walker in front of me as the song quickly became an "I-know-you've-been-sneakin'-around" revenge blues. I followed that initial lyric with "if you're gonna leave, just leave" and that inevitably led to -- "Losin' Your Appeal." 😀🎶 . *The soulful@hhelmer567 on guitar! -------------------- Come here this one and more at: 54 Below - Friday, Sept 18 at 930p #ThrowbackThurday #JazzBlues #Blues #VocalJazz #originalMusic

Not a plug. . . I honestly haven't been telling too many people that I'll be returning to @54below on September 18th at 930p to celebrate my new album, The Promise of You. . I mean, folks are probably already talkin' about me having special guest vocalist @mmeringolo join me that night. 🎤 . . Just the other day, I could've sworn I overheard 2 people on 54th street buzzin about coming to this show. "Two world premieres in one night?!" I thought I heard them say... there was some background noise, so they could've actually said, "hey, wanna grab some pizza?" But it definitely sounded like they were excited, so. . Now, just cause I'm not plugging the night, doesn't mean YOU shouldn't go ahead and spread the word, if you feel so inclined. . Today, I am celebrating the diversity, compassion, acceptance, allyship and kindness that is still thriving in this country alongside (and in spite of) the pain, conflict, fear and trauma that, tragically, so many are experiencing right now. We are a complex and very young country and we are most definitely NOT a single story. My heart goes out to all who are currently being marginalized in the face of injustice and also to the beautiful angels, givers, friends, family members, teachers, students, caretakers and volunteers among us who provide constant support to their communities and inspire hope and optimism every day. If any of this resonates with you, hit me up here or on any platform, come to a show, celebrate community and let's continue to always lift each other up in the face of adversity. Happy Father's day to my dad, @Gerrygoldhaber !❤️ Now, a musical memory to share... Growing up, I was extremely privileged that my dad took me to see all the shows that came through Sheas Performing Arts Center in Buffalo. This fueled my love of musical theatre and exposed me to many of the songs I would go on to perform and later record. We also saw almost every opera, many plays at Studio Arena and concerts at Kleinhans Music Hall. Dad - I am grateful for you every day... for your unconditional love and support and most importantly for your time. And Happy Father's Day to all the dads, grandfathers, stepfathers, and father figures who show up with love and lead with compassion! #fathersday #singer #songwriter #jazzmando #vocaljazz

"I’ll Build a Stairway to Paradise" is one of my favorite Gershwin songs. To me, it’s a more intimate lyric than I’ve often heard recorded or performed, so I wanted to dial it down, but still bring in the bravado of the blues to capture that quiet moment when you discover the excitement within - the spark that drives a comeback, a return, or the pursuit of what makes you happiest. Here's a little clip of "You Are a Love Song" from a recent show at @Maureen'sJazzCellar . I wrote this original as a story of newfound love...full of hope, surrender, and the thrill of possibility. Here's a clip of “Skylark" from my new album, 'The Promise of You' This one begins the journey of the album and captures so much of what the project is about - finding hope and connection when you least expect it, or when it feels completely out of reach. I chose “Skylark” primarily because of its wistful lyrics (thank you Johnny Mercer), filled with longing, faith, and possibility, all of which inspired this arrangement - flowing 6/8 energy, full of tension, release, playfulness, and movement. Hoagy Carmichael's melody layered beautifully over these themes and took the track to whole different level. What does it make you feel? What does it remind you of? Where does it take you? Here it is, friends -- The title track! . I wrote this while walking through Central Park during a difficult time, inspired by nature’s reminder that hope, partnership and love are never far away. I've certainly been influenced by Coltrane’s 6/8 modal feel and the vocal intimacy of Kurt Elling and Chet Baker; I love @summercamargomusic 's lyrical trumpet over this spacious late-night trio arrangement, brought to life by @arthirahara @mikebassobrien & @alvestergarnett -- what does it make you feel? I’ve always felt a deep connection to the quiet reverence of this lyric. Instead of a straight-ahead ballad, Art and I opened the arrangement to let the story breathe, creating a spacious, contemporary feel… to let you linger in the longing to be tucked away in that small hotel.
